CTARC End-of-Year Function To Go Ahead - 4 Dec '21
Our end of year function will go ahead this Saturday, 4 December 2021. (The weather looks doable so far). Start time is 13h00. (The fires will be lit at 12h00). Outside the clubhouse in Laidlaw Road Rondebosch.
The committee have agreed that the club will supply the fires and socially distanced chairs, plus all liquid refreshments will be complimentary until the stock runs out!
That means you will need to bring along... your meat and accompaniments, plates, cutlery, glasses and braai tongs and extra liquid refreshments if required. Even if you do not intend to braai, please come out and say hello to your friends at the event.
COVID 19 Precautions
Having the function in this format will be the safest for all and following the Covid-19 protocols. If you have been in contact with someone suffering from Covid-19 or feeling the symptoms yourself please do not attend. Everyone must sign in and wear a mask at all times except when eating. The club will provide hand sanitiser for entry and at the braai area. It is imperative that social distancing of 1.5 metres be maintained especially at the braai area. Please do not be offended if a committee member asks you to please wear your mask correctly or social distance should they see you are too close to another member. It is for our mutual protection. Remember that wearing a mask is mostly for the protection of fellow club members, not yourself. Show that you care
The Committee will have some donated items for sale on a table. If you have items you wish to sell, you may do so providing you only set up your goods from 13h00. Sellers will need to supply their own bottle of hand sanitiser for the protection of their customers to handle goods and cash. To keep the event small and safe we are not inviting non members to buy or sell. (They will be invited to our usual March flea bumper market).
*** Gentlemen please remind your XL's / XYL's that there will be two tables set up for lady crafters to come and show / sell their wares. Do let me know if I must keep you a space.
So that's where we are at right now, it will be great to see some of you again and we hope 2021 may get us all back to some kind of normality without all of these health safety restrictions.
Further updates may be sent out once the weather for the day has been confirmed. See you all there.
Regards,
Anne Bareham

CTARC Tony Baard ZS1APB Silent Key - 24 Dec '20
It is with sadness we must announce that the key of Anthony P Baard ZS1APB went silent early this morning, 24 December 2020, at the Intensive Care Unit of a Cape Town hospital.
While not a current member of CTARC, Tony was well known to many of us
in the Cape Town radio amateur community. He took part in the 7P8DX DXpedition to Lesotho along with Shaun ZS1RA and Barry ZS1FJ. He attended several of our monthly CTARC meetings and was a regular call sign (ZS1 "All Points Bulletin") on our call-ins on two metres. He worked in a technical capacity at UCT.
Tony will be sadly missed. Our condolences go to his wife Rene, the rest of his family and his friends.

CTARC Security Issues Over the Air... 15 Dec '19
Inexpensive VHF receivers are easily available from a wide variety of internet sources. Criminals are becoming much more technically savvy than they were previously. Although criminals mainly use these radios to monitor security services transmissions, they can also listen to our transmissions.
Members are reminded to be careful about discussing home security issues over the air, along with mentioning that you or another fellow ham will be away from home on vacation [and that therefore the house will be empty].
Even referring to departure or arrival times at the QTH [say, coming home from the salt mine] can be risky.
We need to guard against compromising our own or others' security by revealing sensitive information over the air. This has already caused losses in Cape Town.
Be aware.

CTARC Report on Fox Hunt of 7 Dec '19

Here is a report on the event, by Rob ZS1SA:
We had another foxhunt and it was a lot of fun. This time I hid the fox and I found that by placing the fox on the ground at the base of a steel fence tricked the hunters for quite a while due to the reflections caused by the fence. Eventually it was found by the hunters and we all had a good laugh.
Congratulations to Colin ZS1RS who once again was first to the fox.
Come and join us on our fox hunts; even if you have no equipment.
Any of the hunters would welcome assistance to point the antenna or watch
the radio S meter for example and to guess where the elusive fox may be hiding.
Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday, 25 January at the first meeting for 2020.

Rob ZS1SA

CTARC Fox Hunt - 7 Dec '19
Ideal equipment will be:
- A directional antenna for two metres,
- A two-meter hand-held radio
- A simple compass, and possibly
- Some way to reduce the signal level from your antenna to your radio [i.e. an attenuator].
Great fun to be had by all!
The hunt should take two hours or less to complete.
Always a fun event. See you there!
Rob ZS1SA

CTARC Report-back on Fox Hunt of 17 Dec '18
The event was attended by Jonathan ZS1ARB, Rob ZS1SA and Colin ZS1RS. The timing of the event on the public holiday seemed like a good idea a month ago but as it was, there were at least a half dozen apologies by members via WhatsApp before the event started, promising to attend the next one (which will take place sometime in March 2019 - final date still to be confirmed).
The fox was hidden by a volunteer and found in a parked car on a nearby street in Rondebosch. It was then moved and hidden again under the bushes near our club house. We were grateful as that is where we had left our cars! In both cases, Colin located the fox a good 5 minutes before the other hunters were on the scene, but we were close behind.
We learned quite a bit about the idiosyncrasies of our various antennas and hunting methods. For one thing, I learned to not put the fox’s frequency in a memory in the radio, and rather to use the VFO of the radio so you can tune off a few kilohertz when you are close, in order, to lower the signal into your receiver.
Great fun was had by all and we are looking forward to the next event with even more hunters on the trail.

CTARC Seasons Geetings! - Dec '18
Thank you to all for your contributions to club activities and for your fellowship throughout the year.
If you hear unusual sounds late on Xmas Eve, be sure to check your antenna outside...
We look forward to seeing you all in the new year!
CTARC Fox Hunt - 17 Dec '18
It is estimated that this foxhunt will take about 90 minutes maximum. The minimum equipment you will need is your 2 meter handheld and a directional antenna of some sort. A simple compass will also come in handy. Come as an individual or form a team with a friend.
If you are interested in taking part in this fun event please contact Rob ZS1SA and we can form a group to make final arrangements.
Please meet at the club house at 10h30 on Monday, 17 December for the briefing and the start.
Rob can be emailed on radio@telkomsa.net or WhatsApp to 082-551-5423.

CTARC Bernie Crockford ZS1BW Silent Key - 22 Dec '17
![]() |
Bernie Crockford / ZS1BW (Photo by kind courtesy of Dennis / ZS1AU) |
On Friday 22 December, the key of Bernie Crockford / ZS1BW or “Boere Wors”, as he will be affectionately remembered, went silent. He was 88 years old.
Bernie was born on the channel island of Guernsey.
He saw service in the Royal Navy, and came out to South Africa in 1947 on the HMS Vanguard, which was considered then to be the most advanced battleship in the naval fleet.

Also on board that ship were members of the Royal Family, including then Princess Elizabeth, on their post-war tour of South Africa.
Bernie liked our country so much that he returned here. He married Sylvia, who survives him, and in time became the patriarch of a large family that includes children, grand children and even great grand children who will all, like us, remember him with fondness.
Bernie worked for Gallo South Africa as a recording engineer, in a studio in Oranjezicht. Ted Baker (then ZS1RA) was the managing director. Bernie also worked later on for CNA and was the manager of the Wynberg branch when he retired.
His QTH was in Ferness Rd in Ottery for a number of years, where he kept a significant radio station with a TH6 beam antenna. It was from this QTH that he broke the South African record for DX contacts in the two metre band when he worked a station on a ship up in Luanda harbour on 144 MHz, taking advantage of unusual coastal ducting conditions. As far as I have been able to ascertain, that record still stands unbroken.
Bernie was an honorary life member of both the SARL and of the CTARC. He served as CTARC Chairman and on the CTARC committee. He edited the CTARC newsletter, "Ragchew" for years and also diligently put together the "Acorn Times" newsletter of the Oakdale Klub-Amateur Radio. He also hosted the ZS1OAK Natter Net for some years. He also used to relay the transmission of these CTARC Sunday morning bulletins on the 80 metre band for a while.
Later, Bernie and Sylvia moved up to Langeberg Ridge, where he was not too far from Dave Perry / ZS1SG.
Bernie was one of the great characters of our hobby, broad in compassion, wise in his insights and not unafraid to puncture some over-inflated sacred cows where necessary. We shall certainly miss him.
Go well, old man.
(The above eulogy was compiled by Nick / ZS1ZD in consultation with Paul / ZS1S and Rob / ZS1SA)
Dennis / ZS1AU submitted the following contribution about Bernie:
Bernie was a great radio amateur, a GIANT amongst GIANTS and did so much for all in this ZS1 area.A private family memorial service for Bernie was held on 5th January 2018.
He held the SARL Jack Twine & Honorary Life Member Awards.
He served as Chairman and Committee Member of the Cape Town branch / CTARC & Oakdale Club and was the editor of Ragchew (for CTARC) and the Acorn Times (for Oakdale Club).
Bernie was one of a kind and his XYL Sylvia stood by him in all his ham activities.
He was a popular and likeable human being and we will miss him for his contribution to amateur radio and his friendship over many decades.
My deepest sympathy to Sylvia and his large family.
He was 3 months younger than me and his passing was still unexpected.
Bernie had many interesting ideas and was a very busy and hard-working person.
May he rest in peace.
Grateful thanks to Dennis / ZS1AU, Mike / ZS1FP and and Nick / ZS1ZD for the photographs and articles below of Bernie.

CTARC Seasons Greetings! - Dec '17
The image on the right, by kind courtesy of FlightRadar24, was created by the pilot of an Airbus A380 (with the advanced foreknowledge, permissions and cooperation of the air traffic controllers!) which took off from Hamburg airport in Germany and flew along a predetermined path for five hours at an altitude of 40000 feet.
More on that event is reported on the Daily Telegraph website [here].
