CTARC: International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend: 19/20 August

 THIS WEEKEND!

The CTARC is preparing for the International Lightship and Lighthouse weekend.

REMEMBER There is NO monthly meeting this month, however, there will be a Fox Hunt on 26 August, details to follow:

Once again we have arranged to man the Green Point lighthouse from the Saturday morning of 19 August until mid-day Sunday of 20 August. We have repeated this so often now that our Lighthouse team manages to do the set-up and take-down with military precision but we still need manpower from our members, especially around 10:00 on Saturday morning in order to get our beam antenna raised.

Even if you are not taking part in the Lighthouse weekend, it would be appreciated if club members could come and assist with the set up at Green Point on Saturday morning 19 August 10h00 and for take down on Sunday, 20th  at 11h00. (Committee members will meet at the clubhouse at 08h30 on Saturday morning to load antennas and equipment).

We will be having our very popular and always well attended Sunset Bring ‘n Braai on the Saturday evening (weather permitting) so even if you are not planning to operate, please join us and bring the XYL along for this social event. Fires will be lit at 5pm. Please bring your meat, rolls and salads, refreshments etc; to the braai.

We need operators for the event so please pop in and grab a mike or key and make a few contacts with us, it’s always great fun. This should be especially interesting for some of our new hams to make some international SSB contacts.

If you are planning on staying over (the more the merrier,) then please do let me know soonest and John can arrange enough room for us all. We already have some members staying over this year, which is great news.

See you there.

October Meeting Report Back: Bouvet Island

At the October Meeting of the CTARC we had a very interesting talk from Adrian, KO8SCA online from the USA about the upcoming 3Y0J Bouvet Island DXpedition.

Adrian spoke to us in real time and this video was projected on the wall inside our club house. Members could also take part from their homes by logging into our Jitsi VOIP system. A question-and-answer opportunity took place at the end of the talk.

Please see pictures of our October meeting and the attachment which you may find interesting, which I am unable to put in Ragchew as it's a 2 page pdf...

You can download the the attachment [here].

Thanks to Paul ZS1S for organising this event.

Colin Porter ZS1RS will present a talk and demonstration on Fox Hunting and direction-finding techniques. Colin has much experience in this field and it promises to be a very interesting event.

While the Covid threat appears to be reduced, it is still a potential factor and common-sense precautions are requested from all present at the gathering.

CTARC Forthcoming Mega Flea Market - 5 Mar 2022

Diarise the date NOW.

On Saturday, 5th March 2022, the CTARC will hold its annual Mega Radio Flea-Market and Car Boot Sale. The starting time for buyers and visitors is 12h00 SAST.

The venue, as always, will be the lawn in front of the clubhouse in Rondebosch.

This popular event has grown over the years into the biggest ham radio flea market in the Western Cape, so don't miss it! It's great opportunity to dispose of your surplus equipment, components and , accessories, and to pick up bargains galore.

Where the past two years have put a damper on the event with Covid anxieties and restrictions, we hope, as the situation appears to improve, that this year's flea market will be a good one. Even now, numerous radio amateurs are ransacking their piggy banks and assessing which rigs in their radio shacks must find a new home. And devising creative excuses for their better halves as to why they will have returned home with more items than when they left...

Further details will be announced, but certain requirements hold:

  • Sellers may set up their wares on their tables / car boots at the clubhouse lawn from 10h00;

  • A barrier tape cordon will define the selling area. Buyers are requested to wait for the official starting time of 12h00 before they plunge into the fray!...

  • The event is open to all radio amateurs and interested parties (not just CTARC members) to attend, buy and sell radio-related items;

  • Sellers must bring their own tables and chairs. The CTARC will use all its tables to display various donated club items for disposal;

  • All sellers must please pay a modest Seller's Fee to the Committee; Monies collected will go to CTARC club funds to offset expenses;

  • Parking in the market area in front of the clubhouse is limited to sellers only. There is plenty of other parking available on the tarmac off Laidlaw Lane, to the north-west of the clubhouse (see aerial photo)

  • Because of Covid precautions, food will not be on sale. Bring and braai your own food, please. Braai fires will be available. Ice-cold liquid refreshments will be on sale at the usual reasonable club prices;

  • Any and all equipment brought to the flea market and not disposed of must be taken home at the end of the meeting. The clubhouse cannot store any such equipment.

More details will be announced presently via WhatsApp, the Sunday Morning 08h30 bulletins and pn the CTARC Blogspot. We look forward to seeing you there!

CTARC Fox Hunt - 26 Feb '22

Because our big Flea Market on the first week of March  takes place so soon after the usual fourth Saturday of the month in February, the CTARC will hold another Fox Hunt on Saturday, 26th February 2022. It will be held at or near the CTARC clubhouse.

Bring along your 2-metre band handies and fancy DF antennas! Even just a handie and a rubber-duck antenna will do. Ever since Rob ZS1SA revitalised interest in this fun activity last year, the foxhunts have encouraged increasing interest and have all been great fun. The recent December fox hunt organised by Peter ZS1PC was the best attended that the CTARC has ever held..

Will you be the first to find the hidden CW fox transmitter before the others do? Come along on Saturday and find out...

Further details will be announced close to the time on the Sunday morning CTARC Bulletins at 08h30.

CTARC Meeting - 22 Jan '22

The first meeting of 2022 for the Cape Town Amateur Radio Society will take place on the lawn outside our clubhouse on Saturday, 22nd January at 14h00.

The meeting will be a Show and Tell format, where members are invited to bring along any ham radio-related projects you have been working on, or items of interest, (whether complete or not!) and tell the club about it. If you have an interesting ham-related workshop tool or other gadget that you think will be of general interest, bring it along and tell us about it and how it works, (or was supposed to work!). Even tools or projects that didn’t work out as anticipated are interesting and your fellow members can learn something new. Show and Tell has always been one of our most interesting meetings.

We will also have a Swop Shop where ham-related items may be traded. The CTARC will also have some donated equipment up for disposal for club funds.

Club Regalia will be on sale... we now have a Credit Card facility, so come and buy your short-sleeved golf shirts for the summer.

QSL cards may be collected from me, as mentioned on the Bulletin some cards are from 2014!

If you have ordered a Club Name Badge that will be waiting for you too.

It promises to be a scorcher this Saturday; so please bring some water or refreshments, and be there on time, to get your spot under the trees.

****All Covid protocols will be in place as usual and your mask will need to be worn at all times covering your nose and mouth.

Don't miss this 1st meeting of 2022, it promises to be very interesting.... See you all on Saturday....

CTARC End-of-Year Function To Go Ahead - 4 Dec '21

Hi Everyone

Our end of year function will go ahead this Saturday, 4 December 2021. (The weather looks doable so far). Start time is 13h00. (The fires will be lit at 12h00). Outside the clubhouse in Laidlaw Road Rondebosch.

The committee have agreed that the club will supply the fires and socially distanced chairs, plus all liquid refreshments will be complimentary until the stock runs out!

That means you will need to bring along... your meat and accompaniments, plates, cutlery, glasses and braai tongs and extra liquid refreshments if required. Even if you do not intend to braai, please come out and say hello to your friends at the event.

COVID 19 Precautions

Having the function in this format will be the safest for all and following the Covid-19 protocols. If you have been in contact with someone suffering from Covid-19 or feeling the symptoms yourself please do not attend. Everyone must sign in and wear a mask at all times except when eating. The club will provide hand sanitiser for entry and at the braai area. It is imperative that social distancing of 1.5 metres be maintained especially at the braai area. Please do not be offended if a committee member asks you to please wear your mask correctly or social distance should they see you are too close to another member. It is for our mutual protection. Remember that wearing a mask is mostly for the protection of fellow club members, not yourself. Show that you care

The Committee will have some donated items for sale on a table. If you have items you wish to sell, you may do so providing you only set up your goods from 13h00. Sellers will need to supply their own bottle of hand sanitiser for the protection of their customers to handle goods and cash. To keep the event small and safe we are not inviting non members to buy or sell. (They will be invited to our usual March flea bumper market).

*** Gentlemen please remind your XL's / XYL's that there will be two tables set up for lady crafters to come and show / sell their wares. Do let me know if I must keep you a space.

So that's where we are at right now, it will be great to see some of you again and we hope 2021 may get us all back to some kind of normality without all of these health safety restrictions.

Further updates may be sent out once the weather for the day has been confirmed. See you all there.

Regards,

Anne Bareham

CTARC Forthcoming Meeting - 23 Oct '21

The October 2021 meeting of the Cape Town Amateur Radio Society will take place at the clubhouse on Saturday, 23rd October at 14h00.

The main topic of the meeting will be a talk and demonstration by Dirk ZS1X on Digital Mobile Radio. This new digital feature of our hobby enables licensed radio amateurs to talk worldwide with other radio hams via DMR-enabled repeaters and base station radios. Relatively inexpensive DMR radios are now becoming available. As such this adds a very exciting feature to our available options.

There will also be the usual Swop Shop where amateur radio-related items may be bought, sold and swapped. As ever, should any items you bring along not be sold, please take them home afterwards as there is no room in the clubhouse to keep them there!

As we are all still under Covid regulations, the meeting will be held outside the clubhouse on the lawns. The usual precautions of social distancing, masks and hand sanitising will apply.

At the recent Committee meeting it was decided that, should the weather be unkind to us, the meeting will be held in the hall adjoining the clubhouse.

We look forward to seeing you there!

CTARC Field Day Station Report - 12 Sept '21

On Saturday 12th September, Chris ZS1CDG set up a field station outside the CTARC club house. Unfortunately, a furious South-Easter sprang up and started blowing tables and chairs across the field! So Chris and others repaired to the interior and kept the club house open to enable visiting hams to see and use the equipment. People doing Chris's RAE course were present there as well at periods throughout the day.

Thanks to Chris for his efforts and to all those who attended!

CTARC Field Day - 11 Sept '21

In line with the SARL National Field Day on the weekend of 11/12 September 2021, the CTARC has decided to run a field station at the CTARC clubhouse in Rondebosch. Chris ZS1CDG will set up a field station on the lawn outside the clubhouse from around midday on Saturday, 11 September.

Radio amateurs are invited to come and set up their field stations and antennae there as well. As it is a Field Day event, no mains electric power will be used (unless provided by your portable generator, of course!).

The usual Covid precautions will be in place. Let's keep this event virus-free.

We look forward to seeing you there!

CTARC Report on August Monthly Meeting - 28 Aug '21

The Cape Town Amateur Radio Centre held it's August 2021 meeting on-line, starting a 14h00, on Saturday, 28th August 2021. We were treated to a marvelous presentation about South Africa's Radar activities in the Second World War.

At the outbreak of hostilities, the potential threat of invasion from the Axis forces, as well as U-boat attacks on shipping off the coast of Southern Africa were of great concern to the military authorities. Fortunately, there were two great assets at the Allies' disposal. The first was the invention and development of Radar in Britain.

The second asset was in the person of Sir Basil Schonland (1896 - 1972), a significant figure in our military and scientific history and clearly a brilliant man. Born in Grahamstown, Schonland matriculated (aged just 14) from St Andrew's College as the top pupil in the then Cape Province. His studies took him to Rhodes University, and then to Cambridge University in England. His tertiary studies were interrupted by the First World War where, in the Signal Services of the Royal Engineers, he served in the British Army from 1915 to 1918. He was wounded at Arras, mentioned in despatches and awarded the OBE.

After the war he returned to study Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge. In 1922, he returned to South Africa and lectured at UCT, later becoming Professor of Physics there. In 1937 he moved to Johannesburg to direct the Bernard Price Institute of Geophysics at Witwatersrand University.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, now with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, Schonland was in charge of the South African Special Signals Services and led the development of South Africa's own Radar system. In 1941 he went to England to acquire more equipment for South Africa and became superintendent of the Army Operational Research Group of the Air Defence Research and Development Establishment (AORG) between 1941 and 1944. Under his leadership the Research Group made significant contributions to the war effort, particularly in Radar used by the army. By 1944 he was  scientific adviser to Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. By the war's end he held the rank of Brigadier.

Post-WW2, Schonland returned to South Africa to continue as director of the Bernard Price Institute at Wits. On the request of Jan Smuts, he established the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. In 1954 he became deputy director and then director of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell in the UK. He was knighted by the Queen for his services to Science in 1960.

(Portions of the above attributed to Wikipedia)

(Above map from publication by Brian Austin ZS6BKW)

The presentation, by Allan ZS1AL and Professor Mike Inggs, was most interesting. We were treated to photos, maps and descriptions of the development of South African Radar and the activities of the SA Special Signals Service. The system had two main functions - firstly, that of ocean surface surveillance and secondly, the coordination and ranging of the heavy artillery sited primarily to protect Simonstown and Cape Town harbours from attack.

Of particular interest to us in Cape Town were the descriptions of the facilities positioned around the Cape Peninsula and Cape Hangklip, as well as maps of Radar coverage around the coast at the time.

On a personal note, I was moved by the film clips (some even in colour) of the personnel who developed and operated the radar system during their period of deployment, including the many female operators who tirelessly sat at their stations for long hours under conditions that could be kindly described as spartan. One of them may have been my Auntie Pam. Such was the great secrecy surrounding the entire project that we only learned of her involvement in the Special Signals Service long after she had passed on...

The meeting ended at around 15h45. Grateful thanks to Allan, Professor Inggs and all who attended the on-line meeting. A truly memorable presentation indeed!

Allan has kindly indicated he has more videos of the above topic and we will post links to them here shortly.
