REMINDER... CTARC: FoxHunt: Saturday, 25 February

 Hi Everyone.

 

All fox hunters and interested members are invited to attend our club’s foxhunt on Saturday 25th February. Please be at the clubhouse at 11:45 for the briefing by Peter ZS1PC.

 

The fox will be switched on at 12:00.   

 

Time limit to find the fox is 2 hours. We wIll meet back at the club for results afterwards. Coffee and tea will be available courtesy of Tony TK, and Ice cold refreshments at club prices will be available at the club house after the hunt.

 

Could all those interested in attending let me (Peter) know. Further details will be provided once it is confirmed who will attend. We have a foxhunt  Whatsapp group which Peter can add you to.

 

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone new to fox hunting to learn the equipment and the techniques; remember you can pair up and share a car. Or work solo, up to you.

What you will need:

• Transport, Hat, walking shoes,

• Radio: Minimum of a VHF Handy Talkie (ideally dual band, VHF and UHF, for the 3rd harmonic).
• Antenna: Minimum HT antenna, but will be easier if you also have a VHF/UHF Yagi (Amsat/Tape measure Yagi is perfect).
• Any other secret radio tracking tech in your arsenal.

CTARC Fox Hunt - 26 Feb '22

Because our big Flea Market on the first week of March  takes place so soon after the usual fourth Saturday of the month in February, the CTARC will hold another Fox Hunt on Saturday, 26th February 2022. It will be held at or near the CTARC clubhouse.

Bring along your 2-metre band handies and fancy DF antennas! Even just a handie and a rubber-duck antenna will do. Ever since Rob ZS1SA revitalised interest in this fun activity last year, the foxhunts have encouraged increasing interest and have all been great fun. The recent December fox hunt organised by Peter ZS1PC was the best attended that the CTARC has ever held..

Will you be the first to find the hidden CW fox transmitter before the others do? Come along on Saturday and find out...

CTARC Fox Hunt - Aug '20

As our members will all be aware, actual meetings during the Coronavirus lock-down period have had to be cancelled owing to the stringent limitations on meeting logistics in our clubhouse.

However, there is still a meeting format that is possible, safe and legal, and that is the Radio Fox Hunt! The hunts we have organised at the CTARC in the past have been great fun.

The CTARC is planning to hold another fox hunt at or near our clubhouse (but not inside it!) in the near future. We would like, first, to get an idea of how many would be interested in  taking part in such an event.

CTARC Report on Fox Hunt of 7 Dec '19

Here are some photos from the Fox Hunt that took place at near the CTARC clubhouse on the Saturday afternoon of 7 December 2019.

We had another foxhunt and it was a lot of fun. This time I hid the fox and I found that by placing the fox on the ground at the base of a steel fence tricked the hunters for quite a while due to the reflections caused by the fence. Eventually it was found by the hunters and we all had a good laugh.

Congratulations to Colin ZS1RS who once again was first to the fox.

Come and join us on our fox hunts; even if you have no equipment.
Any of the hunters would welcome assistance to point the antenna or watch
the radio S meter for example and to guess where the elusive fox may be hiding.
Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday, 25 January at the first meeting for 2020.

CTARC Fox Hunt - 7 Dec '19

Come and join us for our next Fox Hunt this Saturday afternoon, 7 December 2019. Meet at the club house at 12h00 noon for a briefing and get ready to find this elusive critter!

Ideal equipment will be:

• A directional antenna for two metres, 
• A two-meter hand-held radio 
• A simple compass, and possibly 
• Some way to reduce the signal level from your antenna to your radio [i.e. an attenuator].

If you do not have all of this equipment, do come along anyway and bring what you have. It is fun to team up with someone who does have a radio and antenna and together determine where Foxy is hiding.

Great fun to be had by all!

The hunt should take two hours or less to complete.

Always a fun event. See you there!

CTARC Fox Hunt - 24 Aug '19

On Saturday, 24th August 2019, there will be no formal CTARC meeting because of the Lighthouse Weekend that will have taken place on 17 and 18 August.

However, Rob ZS1SA, will be holding a Fox Hunt starting from the CTARC clubhouse on 24 August 2019,  starting time 14h00.

For all of you who built your antennas at the June meeting, you may want to go along and try out your new antennas!

Ideal equipment will be a directional antenna for 2 metres, a 2 meter handheld radio a simple compass and possibly some way to reduce the signal level from your antenna to your radio.

If you do not have all of this equipment come along anyway and bring what you have. It is fun to team up with someone who does have a radio and antenna and together determine where Foxy is hiding.

The hunt should take two hours or less to complete.

You may need to do a small amount of driving to find the fox so teaming up with one or two others would be a plus.

We can discuss it when we meet up at 14h00.

CTARC Forthcoming Monthly Meeting - 22 Sep '18

This Saturday, 22 September 2018, is the next meeting of the Cape Town Amateur Radio Centre to be held at the usual clubhouse venue at 14h00.

As our club continues to grow in popularity and membership, seating is limited and those who arrive timeously will be assured of a chair!

The speaker will be Mike ZS1CO, on his recent trip to the USA and his visits to several 'Hams' in the 'States'.

EXCITING NEWS: 

Come and meet ‘The Fox’ on Saturday and learn all about the first ‘Fox Hunt’ event our club will be holding early in 2019…

SWOP SHOP:

There will be a 'bigger' than usual 'Bring 'n Buy' Swop Shop this month, organised by Tony ZS1TK, and there will be tables outside for your goods. The weather forecast is optimistic.

Remember that any goods brought along for sale but unsold must please be removed from the clubhouse afterwards because we have no room to store anything extra in our limited clubhouse space.

So come early and enjoy the afternoon!

CTARC Mysterious Project "X" - 17 Jun '18

Now, at last, it can be told. At great cost to life and limb our trusty operatives have smuggled the following image (see right) out of the workshops of a Foreign (unspecified) Power. Behold Project "X"...

This unique and truly ingenious device exhibits the characteristically flawless metalwork signature of Rob ZS1SA and (when opened) the deftly intricate hand-wiring skills of Chris ZS1CDG within.

It is, in fact, a Fox. Observe it closely, for ere long it shall be, suitably camouflaged, secreted at a hidden location known only to a very select inner circle, and then activated to emit a tantalisingly fugitive signal periodically.

At this point, teams of trained operatives, bearing a variety of directional antennae that bear resemblance to vandalised tape-measures, egg-beaters and ray guns, will endeavor to discover its secret location by way of the dark arts of radiolocation and direction finding.
